Flashback Friday

I love old photos, especially of my family.  Today's Flashback Friday photo is of my maternal grandfather, Gerald VanderZyden. He was born in 1906, I believe in the Netherlands, but I'm not positive.  As a matter of fact, I realize now that I need to do more research on his side of the family.  I had been working on Dawn & my families trees a few months ago, but then summer hit and I put it aside.

Here's a photo of my grandpa when he was a boy.  It's the only photo I have of him as a child.  What I love about this photo of him is his smile and his face.  I can definitely see the face that I knew when I was a child & he was an adult.  He's looks like he is peeling potatoes.  Which reminds me that he and my grandmother use to work together in the kitchen.  They use to have a huge kitchen, big enough to have a chest freezer in it.  Grandpa would peel potatoes and help Grandma get food ready.  And their philosophy was that they could always add an extra chair around the table and another potato in the pot if someone needed a place for Sunday dinner.

Here's my grandpa:
And don't you love the knickers he's wearing? All grandma wrote on the back of the photo is 'Dad'.  I have no idea where this was taken or exactly how old he was.

Grandpa died in 1975 of a heart attack.
