Flashback Friday

I have a bit over a week in posting photos on this blog and I thought that I would do a Flashback Friday - photos from the past that I have in various photo albums, boxes and such.  The first one I am posting is of my maternal grandmother, Christine Nyland Vanderzyden.  I'm guessing that she is about age 7 or so in this photo.  She was born in 1903 and died in 1989.  She was raised by her aunts because her mother and other sister died in 1904 of whatever flu epidemic was going around at the time.  Her sister, Elsa was only around 3 years old when she died.

This is on one of those postcards that they use to make back in the early 1900's.  My grandma wrote 'me' on the top which always makes me smile.

She was an awesome baker and a pretty good cook - meat, potato & veggie kind of cook.  She never learned how to drive.  I believe that she and my grandpa did love each other, they were a good match.  Grandma learned how to keep a very clean house, and it was her ritual every morning to damp dust the furniture.

It's too bad our grandparents can't live to see us become older adults because now there are things I would love to be able to ask her about the family, how to bake certain things etc.  I miss her and am glad that I had her in my life when I did.

  1. Mary...not only is this picture beautiful, but I love the story behind it. What a wonderful way to honor your Gramma!
